[title] => Dear Mother
[time] => 2006-09-30 11:43:02
[hometext] => This poem is dedicated to my mother, who passed away only recently.
[bodytext] => This day is the saddest day of my life, All in a sudden, I feel lonely; I am consumed with lasting grief. Oh, dear mother, You passed away very peacefully. If birth is the prologue, Death is the epilogue of human drama, In the intervening acts, Though last for a while, We are destined to play our role, In what role we are cast, Makes all the difference in our lives. One, cast with the role of mother, Is blessed, ‘cause, she wins our hearts. * * * Mother, you are old enough, To cast off your mortal frame. But immortal you are, in our living memory. I am no Thomas Gray, To write a befitting elegy. And nor a poet, To enshrine you in beautiful rhymes. This is only a story of human bondage, Between a son and a loving mother. * * * Your are a victim of child marriage, A social evil once deep rooted in our country. You married at the age of twelve, When one would be playing hide and seek. How cruel and ordeal, it should ‘ve been, To rein the complex house hold affairs, At this tender age. I recall how you balanced like a tightrope walker, Both as a homemaker and as a teacher, How you would hurriedly prepare b’fast and lunch, Carrying heavy lunch carrier in one hand, And holding my arm in the other hand, Walk down (or virtually run) the distance, To far away school. And many a days you skipped your b’fast, To reach the work place in time. Every day it was a ‘morning-mare’ at the kitchen Struggling with damp fire wood, That produced more smoke than fire. You toiled day and night, Both at home and work place, To ensure, That the future of your children is safe and secure. Never a moment I saw you relaxing, You sacrificed all your life for our sake * * * And finally you decided to take rest; Eternal rest, to compensate for what you ‘ve Missed in your lifetime? Now, your body is placed on the pyre, In a moment fire will be lit, Sooner you will be reduced to ashes. I cry silently, Deep in my heart. And today, You don’t have to struggle with firewood, It’ll not produce smoke, but only flames, Devouring your flesh, with all vengeance. But, I know, you’ll not leave me alone, Like a Phoenix, you would one day, Rise and reborn from the ashes, And dear mother, I wait for that glorious day.
