We’ve lost a favourite son.
Right now we’re lost in nostalgia.
Remembering the things that he’d done.
Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter,
Has lost his life in his prime.
A stingray got him in the chest.
Steve wasn’t fast enough this time.
Steve had a passion for nature.
Steve had a passion for life.
He was willing to face any danger,
To save any animal from strife.
Steve leaves a widow in Terri.
Bindi and Bob with no dad.
Australia Zoo’s lost its leader.
Bob senior has lost his lad.
The family turned down a State Funeral,
Choosing to privately grieve.
With a Public Memorial to follow.
For those finding it hard to believe.
The service was televised live.
Millions tuned in to see.
I was one of those millions,
With a box of tissues next to me.
But I wasn’t crying for Steve, no.
He lived 5 lifetimes in one.
My tears were for those that he left behind,
His wife, his daughter, his son.
Now as the sun sets on Steve Irwin’s life,
Everyone else will move on.
His family faces a tough road ahead,
Steve’s spirit will help keep them strong.
His life’s work shall continue,
Promises have been made.
They’ll build upon the foundation
That Steve Irwin has lain.
And the world will not forget
The message that he put out.
Whenever we see khaki,
Someone is bound to shout…..
CRIKEY!!....CROC’S RULE!

Fantastic, what a great man he was. Your country has lost a treasure, while ours (Richard Hammond) survived. I am glad his daughter was inspired to carry on his work.

great poem for Crocadile Man...we watched the interview Barbara Walters did with his widow..it was heart wrenching.
But like you said, he lived 5 lifetimes in one..and it's those he left behind that we mourn for. great poem..

Jenny, This was a really good write honoring the croc-hunter. I can't imagine what Terry is going through...my heart goes out to her and the family. Steve will be missed by many. Thanks for sharing.
Peace, Laura

Nice tribute Jen, got a lot of heartfelt references in there, and nicely woven together.

I watched part of the memorial on tv, and while I'm used to hearing gushing displays at funerals from people in some kind of bizarre bereavment competition, I couldn't handle Bindi's declaration of love for her dad. I'm sure it was genuine, but her affect was totally off for a kid who just lost her father -and she is old enough to understand what happened -and that fixed smile and glassy eyes just freaked me out.

Plus now we have the tabloid magazine's saying "Terri will never re-marry". Can't they give this woman time to grieve before they squeeze another magazine sale out of her?! I'll lay money down that the same magazines will be fighting each other like rabid wolves to cover her "second chance at love" in 5 yrs time.

Anyway, Steve did pack a lot of adventures and celebrity and good work into his life, so hats off to ya, mate.

Normally I'd say I have no idea how I missed this but my sister had died the month before so I was damn distraught already. I remember his death it's just that I was still wrapped up in my own grief.

It is however interesting on how I just stumbled upon it tonight as just last night on TV they had a tribute to the top ten most shocking celebrity deaths. Steve Irwin was part of that top ten. He was just so full of energy all the time and this poem is perfectly penned for him Jenny.

Thank you very much for writing it.

Tim
