- a Cockatoo I believe
that escaped from its cage
and flew around the house
it found some chips
- that couldn’t be good for it
and a radio
- it turned on
the long-live bird listened
- learnt a language
and roamed the house
a chimney blocked
every window locked
each door bolted
trapped, but free from the cage
a wealth of words to share
but no-one came home
a squatter
never a squawker
without an audience
no-one to share thoughts
and crystal clear windows
- silhouette birds on sunset
roaming the world over
while this parrot
ate his chips
talked to his image
- a bathroom mirror
trapped, but free from the cage
a wealth of words to share
getting fat
and passing away prematurely
before anyone came home.

  • Woah.. I'm not sure what to make of this.

We have 3 cockatoos of our own, as well as
    a couple of cockatiels too.
You've described the way they act so well, it's almost like watching the bird on screen.

Thought-provoking though, how the birdie dies before anyone comes home to witness its half-freedom.

    Thanks for sharing this.

[going to check on her birds now ;p]

very well described poem, it sounded very real. it seems like the parrot has been personified into human like behaviour. well done.
