I am an ephemeral..
and a not too-discontented citizen
of a metropolis, considered
modern by all known taste, evaded
in furnishings and exteriors.
Here, you might fail to detect
the least trace of any monument
of superstition.

Morals and language are reduced
to their simplest expression;
the way the millions,
who need not know each other,
manage education, old age and business.

Merely identical, that their lives must be
several times, less-the-length
than that, which statistics calculate.

And from my objective view,
I see new specters rolling through
the thick, eternal smoke-
no woodland shade in the summer light..

New Eumenides down all the avenues of my city-heart..
death without tears.. diligent laughter and desperate love, part
from the prettiest of crimes commited..
howling, innumerable faulty exsistence.

Billy, I loved the write. I've read it several times and keep thinking to myself, how much I deeply love living in the country and not a big city...
as you say

"no woodland shade in the summer light"

The city to me is conjestion and the country the peace. (I'll take the peaceful one)

Peace, Laura

Sweets~ I find your author's note interesting and it has reminded
me of a favourite quote by Einstein ..

"Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one."

This piece has an almost conflicting feel to it --and simple, but
contented acceptance of it all. (Even the title could have duality
in it's meaning). The last stanza I find sad somehow .. especially
that first line. [And somewhat terrifying to me as well].

Be that as it may, I am stirred in admiration and respect that you
could pull something like this out and place it down in such an
eloquent and flawless manner. Always humbling to experience
all that resides within your unimaginably gifted mind.

A very sharp write~

xx

This.... will surely be on my mind the next time I head to Boston (which is often enough, but never long enough it seems).

But for the references to a metropolis, to the city, this could easily (or nearly) be applicable to all of New England, I'd say. It is, for many I believe, a wayward sort of life here I've often thought. A crime, in so very many ways, I'd concur... a wanting most, I'd suggest, of the wrong sort of things and a failure to embrace the essences that exist, always, somewhere below the surface, behind the curtain, inside the moment. It is no different perhaps than falling to see the beauty of each snowflake for the many than fall in these parts or the glory of a single tree for the dramatic foliage that some somehow are so insane as to become accustomed to for it's appearance year after year.

I must confess that I, too, rush like mad fool into the city for meetings in one of those modern skyscrapers, only to rush away at its conclusion. I, among the many other fools, that do the same. But... never do I do so without feeling such a strong and unique sense of the place and a desire to embrace it more fully. For surely your city, along with others like Memphis and Savannah, is magical. I will never understand how one can go, can be, there without feeling a profound sense of history, of spirits (past and present) and of a richness that eludes description. It is not (I'll be so bold as to suggest) only her people that howl... she does as well. And you, Billy, have just reminded me that I do well to stop more often and listen to her. Thank you.

Truly... an extraordinary piece. Yes, indeed.

I call my close city folk friends "interstate highways" and admit to bein' a "country road" ... and a "critical citizen" to nature and, hopefully, children! I shake my head in awe of your mastery, B.
