Industry teeming below,
The oh-so familiar Scottish air,
Holds the promise of snow,
Couples walking through puddled streets,
Laughing at stories they tell,
Following their worn-out shoes,
Down roads they know too well,
My full skirt blowing within the breeze,
Heels tapping out a tune,
As we head off for dancing and laughter and drinks,
Where all of the youth commune,
The band will play that crazy jive,
And you’ll twirl me through the air,
I look a little like Marilyn,
With my full lips and the cut of my hair,
The men find some reason to gawp,
At me in my new white dress,
And I’ll tell the priest nothing of this,
Tomorrow, when I confess,
I’ll stand there in my Sunday suit,
Playing the dutiful little girl,
And act so shocked and surprised,
At the stories of Glasgow’s underworld,
We’re doing nothing wrong,
Just out to have a good time,
And since when has enjoying yourself,
Been such a terrible crime? [comments] => 1 [counter] => 157 [topic] => 44 [informant] => Ruby2sdy [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 10 [ratings] => 2 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => Nostalgic )

I was three in the winter of '52 and had an older sister with full skirts and quite like your auntie Jean through much of the 50s. You've captured the innocent rebellion of youth against the pretentiousness of, to be nice, judging eyes? This is lighthearted, beautifully written and such a wonderful tribute to your auntie. And so fun to read!
