Lived a wise old woman ever so kind and neat
She was sitting down to eat when a scratching came
The ancient figure looked toward the door as she reached for her cane
As she opened the door to find a little lost puppy sitting on the step
It looked at her with forlorning eyes
"Come in come in," she said, "what a wonderful surprise!"
With a yip, a bounce, and a wag of the tail he came in

She sat down in her chair and called the pup forward
He hopped into her lap like he knew her so well
She examined him with care from his small tail to the frayed cord
The pup suddenly looked the ancient in the face
Their eyes locked, age old blue to the youthful green

"You remind me of a boy I once knew
Sadness as an aura but charming and cute like you
He was a lost puppy to his sanity and the world
I lost him so long ago as he let his crimson unfurl
If I didn"t know better I'd say you were him
The twinkle in your eye suggest you are in someways him."

She sighed for memories long since past
"You can stay with me, you scamp, as long as my body will last.
But I must give you a name, how about Just?"
The pup gave a queer look and shook his head in disgust
"I'll name you for the one I lost, so now your name is John."
The little puppy beamed for he was with a true friend from times long gone [comments] => 3 [counter] => 177 [topic] => 43 [informant] => TundraHydra [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 10 [ratings] => 2 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => oops )
