Words of nothing leak from pores
Are cast by the eyes, every muscle
Yet are mute, formless
And in their mixed expression
Ultimately worthless

Tight-lipped, sound and cadence,
Made small between
Furrowed brow and fixed jaw
But what it is all for?

Simmering silence,
Ready to explode, held in check
A volcanic plug beyond the tongue,
Halfway down your neck

Hands balled into fists
Do not beckon but threaten,
Are not articulates of calm
Stony silence no soothing balm
To the wounded heart

I speak, I feel, I love, I am real
Real enough for words, phatic or otherwise
Is this the true you, or a gender disguise?
I reached out - you pulled back
I extend a hand, you retract
So I am left, an empty gesturing of the air
Like a bird stilled in flight
Or a plaintive cry,
Lost and unreturned in the night. [comments] => 9 [counter] => 281 [topic] => 75 [informant] => spike [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 59 [ratings] => 12 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => anguished )

S~

I can not tell you in mere words what this piece meant to me.

I am muchly impressed by your "words of nothing". So much so, that in them I find a
kind of inspiration. You seem to have a gift for taking a subject and extracting the
emotion from it and so cleverly convey said emotion unto paper as if it were second
nature to you. In fact, I believe that to be true. A talent to be envied and admired.

I adore the last stanza. It not only speaks to me, but screams [seems
to be a lot of that going on here tonight . . .lol]

Great work from a master of words.

Words of nothing related so masterfully the futility of unbit tongue phatically spewed in withdrawl and anger. I love it when the master reintroduces a word into my vocabulary while I'm enjoying his masterpiece. My ol' cowboy hat's off to ya with a bow to, what else, SUPERB, Spike.

The silent fight - oh yes I can relate to this one. I love the descriptive phrases you've used throughout the poem and how they paint the picture of anger, silence and dejection. Well done.
