A cedar grew in Lebanon/Its branches reaching for the sky/An axeman felled it to the ground/The cedar falling knew not why// The axeman's blade in scabbard sheathed/His work completed for the day/'This wood is carved in many forms/But what and why ,I cannot say'.// The blacksmith brings his hammer down/From glowing liquid ir'n a nail/'Once cool it's sharp and enters wood/Oh yes,and flesh it will impale'// A signwriter his fine work writes/In tongues of Roman,Greek and Jew/'This Nazarine's a special one/I'm thankful he's but one of few'// A guard fulfills his master's task/He nails three cedar crosses high/'This central one by Pilate judged/King of the Jews? Then let him die!'// And thus so many men that day/Whose lawful tasks were then unfurled/In thinking as a cedar thinks/Killed they the Savior of the world./// Jeffrey Jones,England.
