In shadow found nothing, had nothing to do
Many dark corners for loneliness there
For hiding my tears, when I would despair

Shadow was comfort, my dark caring friend
Always there waiting, inviting me in
Inside nothing's needed, not hope or a care
Many's the day, I found myself there

My failures accepted, invited to stay
Love me, caress me, through most of my day
It was easy to stay there, to love this dark friend
To wile away hours, till another day's end

No sunlight or darkness, just warmth with no change
No cares and no worries, or things to arrange
No thought of tomorrow, or care for today
No future, no hope, life is easy this way

Without expectations, nobody to please
Spiraling downward, life is a breeze
Lay back and relax, let life come your way
Wait, hoping happiness finds you some day

Spiraling downward, your soon bound to crash
Your life will be shattered, like hammer on glass
Your tools you have left on the roadside somewhere
Your friends are all gone, there is no one to care

There's nothing around you, but shards of your life
No job, friends or money, no children, no wife
No shadow to turn to, you're naked and cold
Only regrets, of the life you have sold

So please, hate me not for the person back then
Condemn me, or judge me, for where I have been
The life you now see, is the best I can do
Growing better and better, with friends just like you

what i like most about this is the lyrical rhythm. We hear a lot of "say no to drugs" and be "above the influence" and after awhile it's just tuned out. The lyrical fascination kind of keeps you going, you want to finish to the end. I think its a nice way to serve a heavy subject and yet with some other poems I've read the lyrical quality distracts from the message of the words and here I find it didn't. I actually kind of expected it to so I was very pleasantly surpised
