[bodytext] => Bushy, hairy eyebrows
colored deeply, unnaturally
look down upon me
in furrowed view

Stuffy office displayed
plaques with another's name
glorified nurse
playing doctor games
and getting doctor's pay

Obese body rolls in chair
confusion read on your face
as you cannot find the heart
of my matter
Where is the chart?
Shuffle, shuffle dig the mascara
from your inner canthus

Sit and judge me?
Within minutes
you think
you know
what IT is that ails me
I see you search
mechanically
methodically
for the prescription pad

Your pale hand poised
with pen
"professional" ready to tell me
once again
what It is
I need to do
jot down little notes
of huge chunks of my life

Scolded for my addictive behavoir?
~~~~Cannabis~~~~
"You seem to have a habit, for"
"Quit smoking" this one says
Prescription drugs woman,
is what you need more of...
We'll double everything
add a little Trazadone to the brew
No addiction with a prescription.
Who are you trying to fool?
In one hour
you've studied me
analyzed me
and I....You
I can't but wonder
Who's more insane?
In this room with no view.
Perfectly written. Can't tell you how many times I met up with a jerk when my doctor was out of town. And, they did not read my chart correctly. So, they say I need to take this and that, and this and that.. they gave me new problems not even in my system lol.. maybe they picked up jane does chart, who knows.. lol.. so now, I just say, nope, I will wait until my doctor comes back..
Your poem had this claustrophobic feel to it. Really great write, explained a lot.. I like the title too..not exactly a nice get away is it lol..had me thinking of A room with a view.. oopse wrong room lol...
Great poem Laura. I didn't think nurses had authority to write prescriptions, maybe in Psychiatry it's different? Dunno. But the situation seemed harsh, where do people get off with judgements?
Stay strong my friend and I hope the new meds are working for you.
I have a friend who is a nurse practitioner...but I can not imagine her acting like that...sounds all wrong to me...good write took the reader into the room feeling the oddness of the situation.
Great write about how power can overtake someone, but so many can see through it, as you did.....Mike
I remember being in a similar situation, and getting angry about the way I was being judged.
Judgemental people make me laugh how can you judge someone unless you're perfect yourself? we all have skeletons.
I totally understand your frustration.
Trust me we're the sane ones!
Laura, I really hear where you are coming from in this poem. Unfortunately, what you describe hear actually happens, all too often. Too many therapists fail to realize that the ciient is the expert on him/her self; and the therapist's role is to facillitate the clients' use of their strengths. I could really go on with this one my friend, but suffice it to say ... thanks for sharing.
Peace Laura,
Will/Terry
Excellent depiction, Laura. I have never been in a "room with no view"
and by the sounds of things ... I never want to be. I loved the ending.
How benign they think they are, (these "degrees" in white coats)
You captured the moment naturally and perfectly, dear friend.
I felt like I was right there with you in the office. A great story that probably spoke to more people then they would like to admit.
Awesome write
My impression is tainted, having skimmed some of the comments before posting my own, but I do have to borrow from some previous comments that you do show a great amount of detail that contradicts the premise of the poem - a room with no window.
Even though you can't see what is out beyond the room, there is enough inside to fill your senses.
Now then, the feeling Ihad when I read it dealt with the idea of wearing masks, acting out social roles and playing authority over others. More importantly, I noted the lines,
"jot down little notes
of huge chunks of my life"
and I wanted to point out the veracity in this. I am a pessimist where psychology and psychiatry are concerned, an advocate for the idea that the self is the best doctor, but, on a more base level, no life can be summed up, regardless of the amount of text written over it.
This is applicable in psychiatric situations, but also in situations concerning mortality. My mind has been hovering over this topic recently, given local events of a few days prior, and so I am glad to have come across a concurrent thought on the matter.
I hope you'll pardon me for my tangent, but I wanted to generally impress upon you how well this poem is in connecting to others on so many different levels.
Thanks for posting it. :)
Pardon me for the double post, as well, but I meant to say "a room with no view," rather than "window." A mistake averted, I hope. :]
Where am I ?
How did I get here ?
I found your poem quite
shear.
Filled with fear.
I've been there.
I am bipolar.
Loved it !
While the subject isn't funny at all, I really couldn't help but 'lol' just a tad while reading along, cause not only did it remind me of something similar I wrote about headswells (That's what I call them ;) ), but it just took me back to the time when that was happening in my life....Another lifetime ago, mind you, but I still very much recall the judgemental nature they had, and the feeling of an alien trying to pluck my brain, and dissect my every thought...Grrrrrrrr! I also can't help but 'lol' at the thought of you telling them just WHAT they can do with their pen and pad!! Hehe : )
