When I used to sit on the countertops and watch your cook
You would carry me in your arms and tuck me in every night
And that’s how we spent our weekends at your house
Eating oranges under the sun.

At nine I moved halfway around the world
I never complained, knowing all the reasons.
I lost myself in my books and the stories you once read to me.
Even though we talked every weekend it was never the same

At thirteen I started over.
Yet I still longed to be that little kid again.
Why should I have to grow up without you?

At fifteen you came to visit
But you reminded me that I had grown too big for your lap, and perhaps even your world.
In the two months you stayed, you only spent a week with me.

Here I am again, but not the child I once was.
Yet I still hold the hope of watching you cook, like I once had.
I still have the sweater you knitted for me when I was five, even though I have long overgrown it.
Tell me when you come to visit again
So I can empty myself of all emotion this time.
