Wheezing for weeks, we keep saying it’s old age. We’re not ready to admit she’s on her last legs. She eats well and that’s our signal, we say when she stops eating we’ll know it’s time to have her put down.

Last night she was struggling for breath, wheezing so loud you could hear it all through the house. She wasn’t eating either. We waited, hoping she’d bounce back she had before.

This morning she was no better. So just about half an hour ago we took her to the vets to be put down. She was none to happy about the ride either, wrapped in a bath towel I’d warmed up in the dryer. I wonder if she knew where she was going and why? Animals are a lot smarter than we give them credit for.

Tears in our eyes we let her go. Almost 20 years old – she’d outlived a pride of cats. She was a witty and brilliant creature, a lovely sooty shade of gray with green eyes. She was a real character in her old age, she used to chase stray dogs out of the yard, march them right out to the roadway and shoo them on their way. She beat up cats half her age. A few months ago she stole a dead chipmunk from the neighbors cat, right out from under his nose on his own porch.

She’ll be missed.

20 years! My god, thats a great life-span for a moggy. Such a sad but loving tribute, never overly sentimental or mawkish. Pets are such a loss when they leave us.
