Array ( [sid] => 11454 [catid] => 1 [aid] => mick [title] => Jonathan Pioneer Penguin [time] => 2003-01-28 02:00:00 [hometext] => This is a story of epic courage and endeavour by one of God's least understood creatures

The scene ....a deserted Antartic weather station. Nearby stand a flock of penguins. [bodytext] => Far to the south in the land of snow
remote from the hand of man,
the penguin day is swim and play
their part in The Good Lord's plan.
They bask, they preen, they stand serene
as only penguins can.........
and all conform, to the penguin norm
excepting.......Jonathan!

When the weather men abandoned camp
Jonathan went down for a look.
They'd surprisingly left a library
where a book his interest took
"Birds of Antartica" it said
with pictures at which he shook!
"It says I'm a bird!" and he read every word.
(It was a Penguin book)

As the import of what he read sank in
he found it hard to deny
that all along they'd got it wrong
what else could it imply?
"If these fin things are really wings
can someone tell me why
our aquatic role at the sothern pole
we're birds! Why don't we fly?"

There followed an awful lot of not
quite "getting it togethers".
Beating the air, his "wings" a blur
and running "hell for leathers".
"I wonder why, I cannot fly
in spite of all endeavours
my hadicap's not rate of flaps..........
IT'S LACK OF BLOODY FEATHERS!"

And so he went back to the Library
Where a kite soaring book he spied
"To fly entails a pair of sails
stretched wide".....he read and sighed,
This type of flight , indeed just might
be something to be tried
"Without a doubt flipper flappin's out
I'll make a sail and glide!"

A plastic sleeve from an atlas there
had moulded pockets which
his wings and feet slipped in quite neat
with neither cut nor stitch
The wind was strong.....his flight was long
but landing saw a hitch
he'd good control, in yaw and roll
but rather less in pitch!

Back again "to the drawing board"
to have another scan
at chapter 9 "Advanced Design"
and make a new sail plan
he read about "induced washout"
and suddenly thought I can
just curl my toes to raise the nose
like kinda cool, hey man!

High o'er the ice in the midnight sun
a little penguin soars.
The flock below reward each show
with rapturous applause.
He flies with ease! He three-sixtees
to seek out thermal cores
that germinate in the glacial plate
on places where it thaws.

Far to the south in the land of snow
remote from the hand of man.
The penguin day is swim and play
their part in The Good Lords Plan
The bask, they preen, they stand serene
as only penguins can.
and all conform to the penguin norm................................................
