She lays and ponders the year gone by
All the events included
Seems just like the blink of an eye
Events mount up when concluded
But not of all the diary dates
Does she begin to recall
Remember all the little pleasures
With no worldly relevance at all

Gum on her shoe at the bus stop
A moan then a laugh in the queue
A breeze that woke her from a sunbathing slumber
Some knowledge from which she grew

Smells come to mind and with them come images
New mown grass, a cutting’s fight with her son
A sniff of a baby’s hair, as she hands her back to Mum
Wet dog, nose wrinkles, followed by a grin
That gawky dog always makes her laugh
When he bravely launches himself in

Embarrassed she remembers, cheers from a minibus van
As they caught her singing her head off
In a traffic jam
A conversation heard, between boy next door and his pet
In a language she’s not quite deciphered yet

A light in a window, somebody’s home
Somebody she’s been wanting to hold
A soft touch that vibrates
As into arms enfold

Walking home barefoot, puddles cool her feet
Danced all night in killer heels, barely took her seat
Recalling the salt in her throat, as on a nut she almost choked
Always wanted to die laughing, close shave, on recovery she had joked

The taste of salty tears, holds memories good and bad
Plenty of both this year she’s had
A warming cup of coffee, when home from shopping trip
Guffaws of laughter at another tactless Freudian slip

The Calendar holds 365 days
Each one filled in a myriad of ways
Newspaper headlines from memory disappear
They are just not important as she logs her year
As time ticks by, the year comes to an end
To all those she cares for, her best wishes she sends

Splendid write. We remember the big things but most of our time is filled with the little things that in the end do truly matter. Some are life's lessons quickly overrun by larger important things. My goodness with time drawing near and having an extra 2 seconds next year. What will we do with all that time? Enjoyable read.
