the smile I grasp for meant for another
She approaches to ask something meaningless
her words I pretend are meant for me

Overlooked and overshadowed
the toll of life clearly evident in my eyes
My face has none of its youthful wonder
the failures reflect in the mirror

The past cannot be held close...for it lies
the future no longer a given
Misunderstanding the wrongs I have offered
turning away from the gifts I now bear

I cannot live my life in her happiness
it doesn't include me...though I still hope
Hugs that were once warm are now just cordial
fingers no longer laced together...forever

The phone still rings but not for me
letters not written and never mailed
This isn't how I envisioned what's come to be
pierce my shell and find nothingness

Looking for solace in realms of solitude
pulling deeper within myself...falling
Would I recognize coming redemption
or is my soul too corrupt for simple love again

Catching her eye I bade her welcome
come look at me and the person I am
But she glances away and looks for another
her smile never to grace me again

Sadly emotive, but written full of detail, and easily relatable to the average reader. Nicely done.
