Who hated Valentine's Day, The rows of commercial affection In heart-shaped boxes Of waxy chocolates On drug-store shelves, Walls of cards she'd spend hours Looking through, for something, Is all she'd say, And roses, roses, roses, Screaming at her Everywhere she went. She'd get hammered every day For at least two weeks Before it happened. And complain to me, About all those whiney broads On TV sit-coms portraying, badly, Pathetic angst over their Valentines, Would he, or wouldn't he? Their stories always had A happy ending. My friend's never did. She'd start to sober up The day after it was finally over, And then bring home One of those boxes of chocolates Left-over, for herself, Because they were half-price, Is all she'd say. I told her the only decent Valentine's Day I'd every had Was the one I was given a plate Of heart-shaped cookies, Clumsily cut-out and frosted By a child. She just looked at me, Half-drunk, and smiled.
