The leader sleeps watchful and protecting
His pride is his life, his family.
If he were too let them go through callous carelessness
Too morbid is the consequence.

His eyes twitch and flicker with unwanted light
He moves to find the source
Which disrupts his midday slumber
Finding in the thick, woven grass
A mirror of ancient build.

Looking at his reflected presence
He does not notice shadows creeping
He notices the symmetry of his face
The regal structure of his jaw
Which he so proudly juts.

His eyes scour his lustrous mane
It glow with radiance and ego
The shadows infiltrate the field
The lion studies his golden strands
So fine and soft in the Savannah winds.

The lion is captivated by his coat of self-indulgence
He loves the way he gleams as he basks
He admires how masculine he is compared to the lower males
Shadows see their chance.
Lion sees his beauty.

The cry that erupts from the pride is like a beast with pierced underbelly.
Setting a chilling, morbid fear into the lions breaking heart
The lion watches his pride die at the hands of shadows
Helpless, too far away, longing, too proud to die.
His body remains intact
His face unscarred
His glorious looks
Untainted by death
He remains alone with his pride.

A lion full of pride slumbers in the midday sun.

very good write, this analogue for human pride and weakness works very well. I enjoyed the wording as well, good stuff!
