Array ( [sid] => 104919 [catid] => 1 [aid] => mick [title] => Thank You [time] => 2005-09-02 16:47:24 [hometext] => Dedicated to my friend Dan. In many ways I would not be here if it were not for his friendship. [bodytext] => Notes: In the poem I use a greek word for the word friend "agape" ( pronounced "a-gop-a") not to be confused with the english word agape which is spelled the same way but pronounced differently. There are two words that I know of for friend in the greek language phileo which is acquaintance and agape which is a much deeper friendship. There are a few people who I have this sort of friendship with where we are more like family than friends Dan is one of them. I hope that each of you will come to have a friendship like that. I hope you enjoy the poem which is a dedication to him.

There are not words to describe that will help me to say
what your friendship really means to me.

I can conjure substance from our dealings in the past
and hope they still are in your memory.

Scattered shards of talks we had important
barely bring what I hope into view.
For what memories of us that I could speak of
would be better than the simple words thank you?

I can try to use words that are didactic
but you may not understand what they mean

I can write in a way that is flamboyant
but it would take away from the real me

Times you helped me through my sad times
words can not express
I hope that I will do the same
if you ever feel distressed
The sun rises on us and I hope it will not set
but I know it will, but before it does

Thank you for a friendship pure like water
Thank you for a depth just like the sea
the world sees it and they are astounded
yet it means so much more unto me

The world can be filled with such depravation
people use their friends for what they need
but I have found some one to say "agape''"
a love to last throughout eternity

I watch the world in all it''s acclamation
build walls soon washed away by the sea
I call you more than friend you are my brother
I thank you for the friend you''ve been to me

(To the moderator in the notes where I show the reader how to pronounce the word agape (a-gop-a) if it is possible please replace the first a with an upside down e for that represents the correct pronunciation Thanks) [comments] => 5 [counter] => 441 [topic] => 16 [informant] => Archie [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 25 [ratings] => 5 [editpoem] => 0 [associated] => [topicname] => FriendshipPoetry )

Ahhh yes...'friend' and 'acquaintance' is most definitely different! I'm glad you realize that. This is a wonderful dedication to your friend, and it sounds like he's really been there for you in times of need...I hope you'll be sharing this nice write with him: )

Ah! this is a marvellous paean on friendship on the highest level- "Agape".
It has existed throughout history. St. Augustin had Proklus (if I spell it correctly) and Schiller's famous "Zu Dionisyum dm Tyrannen sclich:"
The story of two friends of whom one was to be executed, but begged for a repriefve till he married his daughter. He left his friend to vouch for his return after the ceremony of his daughter.
AFter the ceremony in a far-off province he ran over mountains to make it for his execution, and then just arrived before they strung his friend up.
Story and Schiller's poem (in German) tells The tyrant was so moved- he gave him free

Great poem! "A G A P E"!

Elizabeth
