Another Sunday night
He steps to the mic
Beneath the bright stage lights
Singin’ prerecorded songs
From someone else’s life

Now he’s had his dreams
They didn’t take him far
He thinks he made his wish
On the wrong damn star
He just keeps on getting’ older
And the music’s getting’ way to hard

Papa, can you sing a song about
The days when you were young
When the party still continued
Even after the day was done
When you lived each day like it was your last
Not like you were tryin’ to dig up the past
Can you take us back to yesterday
And the music that you played

He wrote his whole life down
In a bunch of notebooks
But nobody ever
Took a second look
They just kept on tellin’ him
That he needed a better hook

Papa, can you sing a song about
The nights when you were free
When you lived your life through your guitar
Back when you still believed
That you’d get your shot and you’d make it big
Try to feel it again just like you once did
Can you take us back to yesterday
And the music that you played

Do you remember when your words meant something
And there was something important to say
It never mattered to you if they understood
But you never gave yourself away

Papa, can you sing a song about
The days when you were young
When you set out on your journey
And your life had just begun
When you lived each day like it was your last
Not like you were tryin’ to dig up the past
Can you take us back to yesterday
And the music that you played

Can you take us back to yesterday
And the music that you made

Scott, this was such a powerful poetic poem. You have captured the essence of a lost/failed musician.

I really have nothing more to say, except WOW!!!!

Sometimes Naz we old uns do tend to relive the past perhaps we repeat ourselves. It is just a part of getting old. One day perhaps he will sing that song of his youth when he was young it might surprise you. best regards from bernard2

It is not an easy life to break into. Yet they continue to strive for their dream. It is sad, but it means that much to them. These lyrics are tremendous. Sounds like something Kristofferson might sing, lol.

Our songs are never over until we're not here to sing them. There's always something new to feel or think about. I like this - what the young say to nostalgia - live now!
Wonderful write - I liked this a lot.
Blessings, J.

Totally loving your work..
(*accidentally-on-purpose forgets to mention that she dares to call herself addicted to his writes, whenever life spares her the odd moment or two..*)

This, too, was lovely, and amazing.
I can easily think of a multitude of songs (minus their lyrics, but keeping the time and key signatures..) that would fit this piece almost perfectly.

A brilliant piece.. reminiscent of something in the past..

Naz,

A beautifully written poem. It did strike a really sad and meloncholy note with me. I guess it's really tomorrow that brings the most apprehension. Hopefully today is a composit of the wisdom garnered from all our yesterdays. Hopefully we doh't have too many regrets. I think when I look back on the past, I become aware how really alone we are on our journey.

One of my favorate quotes: "He never promised us a smooth journey, just a safe landing."

Well done sir,

Will/Terry

This has got to be one of my favourites of yours.

I love how this tells a story, but I must say one thing... his dreams weren't all bad, and his life wasn't terrible.. It sounds as if he is singing to his daughter.

I love that second stanza. In a small way I can relate to it.

Good write my friend.

*hugs*

It is writes like these that give me the encouragement to keep writing. I would like to hear this one day if you have it recorded. I like this piece a lot.
