One By One

I am the empty womb;
Expelling my children
At the passage of the moon;
Hooded, in shroud of bone;
Destroying little lives;
In Silence;
One by one.
In my tight lipped fortress;
Babies die in here alone;
Sealed with a kiss;
In the dark emptiness
Of a windless, winding
Silence;
One by one.
I’ve seen off the horde
Disgorged in tumescence;
Drowned in black blood;
As I flush my brood
From the impenetrable
Silence;
One by one.
Thirty years, then I’m done
A flap of skin
Wasting in the dark, alone;
All my darlings gone:
Counting the days
In silence;
One by one.
