The Night Before Goodbye

You asked me if I expected
You to beg me to stay.
Not beg, just something,
To try to keep me from going away.
I do realize that you
May not think that’s fair.
But there are times when I feel,
As if I’m the only one who cares.
Anything would have been nice.
I don’t know if it would alter my decision.
But at least I’d know I mattered once.
That at a time, we saw a similar vision.
A vision of a future together.
A future of you and me.
All the dreams we spoke of,
Even though, now it won’t be.
I was hoping you’d do your best,
To keep us from goodbye.
Just so I would know for sure,
That they really weren’t lies.
I’d like to believe we once stood a chance.
As small as it may have been.
I would have like you to show me,
It wasn’t just my imagination.
Knowing I’d be leaving soon,
You seemed so content with my farewell.
Now you say this is hard for you too.
But to be honest, I can’t tell.
Now the times upon us.
Tomorrow, my last night at work.
I’m sure we’ll talk before I leave.
So much, this goodbye will hurt.
I still want to kiss you again.
Tomorrow I’ll want to so bad.
But you won’t let me and I really can’t.
It would make me feel so good, but so sad.
I know I’ll want to hug you.
It will be our last time.
I’ll pretend for that moment,
That you are really mine.
If I do get to hug you,
It will be so hard to let go.
I promise, I’ll try to be strong.
Though my hurt will definitely show.
You’re the only true love I’ve known.
Goodbye will be so hard to say.
I’m not even sure I can.
But I can’t see any other way.
I do believe you’re my soul mate.
It’s the only thing I really know.
Oh, how I dread tomorrows goodbye,
I really don’t want to go.
