we are travellers,
it’s in our DNA:
the near in you
came from really far away.

the mitochondria,
little power cells
of an unbroken female line;
from 200,000 years ago
—that’s quite a bit of time.

and on the frail tide
the little Y,
an unbroken line
on the male side,
in roughly the same time frame,
to win the lottery and the game.

don’t forget the viruses,
and bacteria too;
without their companionship
there is no me and you.

add some Denisovan, Neanderthal,
the species that didn’t make the cull:
before they diverged into extinction,
they left a trace of their distinction.

and the 92 elements in you and me,
the building blocks from stars to sea;
forged in that celestial foundry that,
let proteins and amino acids ‘be’.

we are travellers,
it’s in our DNA.
the near in us
came from REALLY far away.
