Im here for the old man, the young Marine said. The nurse quickly took him to sit by his bed.
He couldn’t see much through the oxygen tent; But he reached for the hand that was trembling and bent.
He hasn’t got long, theres no more we can do. You know the nurse said, he was asking for you.
As the evening passed he held the hand tight; And spoke words of comfort long into the night.
And when the old man had breathed his last breath; The nurse came to tell him his father was dead.
I dont know this man, mam, the young Marine said; I came for another reason instead.
To tell a boys father his son has been killed. I stayed cause this man was alone and so ill.
The boy was my friend, and I promised the lad; I’d come here to carry the news to his dad.
What is his name? Well go find his bed;
His names John Sebastian, the young Marine said. Tell me, this man that I sat with tonight; he was expecting a visitor, right?
His son made a promise that he would stop by; To be with him so they could say their good byes.
I thought you were him, but son, in the end; Youve kept the promise you made to your friend.
In your uniform as you sat by his side, you seemed like his son to an old mans poor eyes.
Now theyre together and all will be well, because he was the father you came here to tell. .
