G’day – it’s Australia Day!
commemorations under way
for recognition and display,
(except for those who have their say
that it really is Invasion Day).

slap a chop on the barbie,
crack a beer or two
make jokes about refugees,
that’s what we seem to do.
a day off work, a leisurely swim
celebrations to make you grin;
all hide an age-old sin
—the spoils go to those who win.

yes, it’s a day of mourning,
for those who lost it all
Terra Nullius was a lie, for
the unsuspecting Aboriginal.

and a day of celebration
for those lives, torn asunder,
who found a second chance
in this amazing land,
Down Under.

I didn’t ask to be born here,
my ancestors came in chains;
so I shed a tear for what was lost,
and ponder what remains.
