I’d heard the name Shakespeare
although all I could hear were words of hate.
Such a cruel thing I grew up believing
Shakespeare was such an awful read
always dreading the day
Shakespeare would come up from his grave
and join us for a class read.
I grew up in a school always being taught
but not once did I learn.
The mind became black and gray
you had to do it this way
or no way.
Failure wasn’t a lesson
failure was you are a failure.
The person who
you once knew yourself to be
got stripped away
replaced by a walking zombie.
I lost myself.
I lost myself in the place
where you are supposed to
find yourself.
The place that is supposed to
prepare you for the “real world.”
My question is
how am I supposed to
survive in the “real world” if
my mind is a blank sheet
only ready to be filled
once given specific guideline instructions?
Luckily for me,
I discovered something exquisite
literature
what beautiful works of art.
I strive on exploration and free thinking
expressing what lies in my mind
it doesn’t matter if no one can make sense of it
creativity is my thing.
I’ll never forget the day I
wrote my first poem
from then on
I was eating poetry.
My mind became an endless road of
possibilities
that opened a brand new door
I let my thoughts run wild
always asking questions wherever I go.
I now only have one thing to say
to the teachers that kept my thinking
black and gray
you will see one day
my creativity?
my freethinking?
I won’t be a waste of space
I will make a change
and you better not believe
you had anything to do with that.
This time baby?
I rebelled against that damn broken system.
