What Are Hearts For?

What are eyes for mummmy, what is their use?
To see of course my sweet, all of nature's wonderous things
Birds lifted high in the sky, angels dancing up in the blue
Water trickling lazily down the mountainside
Rocks polished smooth by it's familiar course
Horses galloping freely over dusty plains
Manes tossed wildly by the billowing breeze
Then mummy, what of the starving
Those with cup in hand whom hunger drives to walk the streets
Those whose lives were torn apart by bullets, bombs and lives built of lies?
We turn our gaze away from them, keep our focus on the silver lining
What are mouths for mummy, what do they do?
To speak of course my love, to tell of riches bestowed by mother earth
Of oceans filled with the finest jewels of the sea
To the tallest range of snow capped peaks
Where darkenes reigns all winter long
Or islands fringed by soft white sand
Where turtles make their nests
Then Mummy, what of the lands scoured by mans destruction, raped my machine
Resources bled from deep underground, insides ripped away?
We do not speak of them, those decisions we did not take
What are ears for mummy, what purpose do they have?
To hear of course, my precious one, to listen to the humming bee taking nectar from the flower
Or a beautiful song from a violin, bowed to perfection in expert hands
To the call of the doves, silk tones in late afternoon
Then Mummy, what of the cries of the homeless
Whose world was stolen in the blink of a storm
Or those imprisoned by merely speaking words
Sentences condemning when they dared to give alternatives?
We cannot hear conspiracy, subversive thoughts are not welcome here
What are hearts for mummy, why do we have them?
This time she paused, cast her eyes to the ground
Then drew deeper breath, raised her hand and sighed
With hearts we feel the love that binds, compassion for our fellow man
A child way beyond her tender years had made her realise
The purest heart in the darkest world should always be what drives.
