Shadow Dream.

In a winter wood I came upon a shadow.
Wearied by loneliness it haunted this wild desolate place.
No breeze stirred, no birds sang, no fox barked
And no badger groveled in the earth of his sect.
The air hung heavy with a dark premonition.
I looked above me at the rising tree line,
The tall branches stripped bare by the season's wrath.
I sat on a stump of oak and watched fragments of sky
Penetrate the gaps in the trees
And all around the woodland floor trembled,
The air echoed with hollow laughter,
A pale imitation of happiness.
From somewhere far distant thunder grumbled,
Lightening forked and split the tree line.
I stood up and embraced the advancing shadow,
Entered its loneliness and claimed my birthright.
