I have seen the watchman sleep

I have seen the watchman sleep, while souls are thrown upon the heap
And all the while the doctors pick a bone
I have seen depression creep, and drag the poor into the deep
And all the while the doctors sit a throne
I have heard the strong man cry, the proud man beg, the lost ask why
And all compressed into a silent wail
I have heard the whispers fly, the truth be rolled, into a lie
And all within the confines of the veil
I have felt the victim’s pain, and told them they would rise again
When nothing more the body could ensure
I have felt the awful shame, and helped the guilty bear the blame
When nothing more the conscience could endure
I have helped the yearning mind, to understand, to test, to find
And silently to form the endless bond
I have helped the dying pray, with not a word, nor moan to say
And silently to face the great beyond
I have glimpsed the higher plan, as man of God, as friend of man
And why did he call out to one so low
I have glimpsed the ugly bride, and seen the groom stand by her side
And why he loves her I will never know
