I Carry You With Me

I lie awake with the lights out
until the early hours,
sleep evades me.

I see your face in the midnight hour,
reach out to you,
watch you vanish.

the night drags on; I toss and turn
think about our life
that had been.

I climb out
from beneath the covers,
chain smoke beneath the stars.

I know soon that I will drift away,
dream a dream of you
before aware of another day.

opening my eyes
to morning light,
how it almost burns these days.

the seductive dream of you flees
as if frightened
by the early light.

the memories come;
thoughts about what I
could have done differently

haunt me while I lie there,
staring up at the ceiling,
watching the cobwebs

sway in the burning light
of another day;
sway in the breeze.

this whole ordeal of my life
makes me feel scared.
you tell me there is no point

looking back on our past together,
but I cannot resist the memories,
they seep from my skin.

mostly now, I stand at my window,
watching afternoon light fade,
thinking about our life together

because I carry you with me
always.
