Animals at the Beach

Dead feathers and rot linger as
their skin screams at the radiated sun.
Youth is being seared in the bakery
as the jagged shells harden
in confinement.
The bum and the businessman
sacrifice queen for queen.
Judging and perceiving
as the spilled watercolors
soak into the stones below
the concrete bench.
Lifeguards are stopping suicides
while the children drown
in a single file line.
“Checkmate!”
yells the man with no shoes;
and he speaks from his mind
as if it were a book with words
written on top of one another.
