I began life in rundown Toronto - a mother on crack
Brothers who watched each others back

I wasn’t even one when we were alone
Mommy had been taken by police drones

We were taken my children’s aid
I don’t remember but I know how we paid

Mommy was gone away not forever but today
She didn’t come the next, or even after that day

I do she came home better and brought us together

Thirteen years later it happened again, mommy wanted to die
But why was I there, “911 help me please” and I wanted to hide

Away I went again with my father this time, somewhere with love
But the problems still happened, now me here alone in my room

Afraid of life, wanting death wanting away- salvation came
My mommy is better and I can go home once again

It’s class time now and homelessness is the topic
I can’t listen I wish they would drop it

I love my brothers I have two one is well
The other is trying to survive, live and enjoy

I say it’s a choice- freedom, exploration, and understanding
The class just stares “it’s true he learns more than I
Out in the street

One year later, I am seventeen
I’m alone, cold desperate and unclean

I’m in a shelter for the teens with mistakes
I want better than this I’ll do what it takes

Today I’m wise and brave I’ve learned a lesson
Today I am 19 and I have began college

I made it, I knew I could do it, never again do I want that life
Do what you can and dream the dreams to strive for

The past was nothing but the future is forever
