My Butterfly

I was at the blood drive
listening to an old vet
from Vietnam
talking about his experiences.
It was a military blood drive.
He mentioned things about war -
the ups and downs of it all -
And I just sat there
because he wasn't really talking to me,
He was just talking.
I saw a shadow dance across my legs,
fluttering around back and forth,
And I thought, “That's a nice butterfly.”
As I followed the shadow
that fluttered around back and forth,
I pictured this butterfly enjoying
The slightly cloudy, peaceful afternoon.
The vet continued talking, now
about some people who had died -
close friends he knew and missed.
Out of the corner of my eye,
I saw a brown leaf fall silently
to the ground
as its once-dancing shadow
rose to meet it.
