Becoming Deaf to Love

I remember the touch of love
her breath as she reached in to kiss
- but stopped suddenly
just to look into my eyes
and smile
because she knew she had me
and yet never to realize
the small and fragile girl
was stronger than I could ever be
A time before the sour smells
cheap thoughts, expensive drinks
boozed and giggly creatures
eager to shared their cold bed
- just once
and forget your name in the morning
thinking that theirs is the only broken heart
because a boys a temporary thing
too frequent an object to hold onto
I remember the words of love
she would say with wet eyes
while I’d hide mine
- and try to catch my breath
with a voice inside
telling me that I couldn’t be enough
with heart so willing to prove I am
because nothing could ever compare
to the simple joy of her heart and mind
A time before I woke alone
silent and lost in the meaningless
of the games of the real world
hungover and phone calls
from a girl who want to know me this week
impressed by my honest eyes
still willing to strip me of a little meaning
and leave me with nothing to fight for
with no reason to listen if the words come again;
“I’ll love you forever”
