Devil in the Detail

The night the dark embraced me
Was the night I was reborn,
She was a devil in the shadows
But an angel in the morn
She drew from me confessions,
And gave penance for my sins
Then whispered through her ruby lips,
‘Payment now begins’.

The devil’s in the detail,
The problems in the small
I should have read the fine print
But I signed away it all
I should’ve focussed on the picture,
And not the stunning frame
She shook me off the Richter
But I’m lining up again

She came to me for closure,
But left me without breath
She drew from me my lover’s soul
And drained me near to death
There was steel in her voice that night,
Just when I thought her frail
She said, ‘It’s time to pay the fiddler’
And drove me to travail.

I’ve been told that foolish wishes
Only buy you pain and grief
There are dames there for the asking,
And others out of reach
But I dreamt of a seductress
And we joined in sweet contract,
Just read between the lines before you
Make a lover’s pact.

The devil’s in the detail,
The problems in the small
I should have read the fine print
But I signed away it all
I should’ve focussed on the picture,
And not the stunning frame
You never know what hit you,
But you’d do it all again.
