You'll Never See Me Again

Phone conversations with you
are getting harder than
speaking to another person should
get
you know there is no
way I’ll ever let you read these words
so afraid to reveal my deepest flaw,
so sure just a chip in my wall
would give away my most
telling paradox

“there is nothing you can
tell me that will drive me away”
it’s not driving you away
that tightens my fists
it’s the proximity of minds
that makes me so
very unsure about the humans
that share this generation
I don’t want them close, God
forbid they get closer

but you are set on solving this puzzle
even though you know
the instant you have me figured out
the instant you cut to the
fiery core
“you love me!”(so he said, so long ago,
so breath-defying true)
you’ll never see me again
why must you insist
on stirring the silt that’s sat for years?
you’ll never see me again
