I didn’t stay up for hours, stressing about college,
or bite my nails,
anticipating that one, acceptance letter.
Heartaches and romance didn’t exist when I was five,
Nor did I wonder if I would ever survive.
The words “I’m broke”, “I’m in debt”,
Had no meaning in my simplistic mind.
I never wished I could rewind the years,
forget the tears, erase the years.
Over the past decade, I’ve developed a habit.
One that kills, but feels, oh so good.
Inhaling the death, releasing the stress,
A feeling I never knew as a kid.
Now, out of college, trying to make a living.
I scrape, just to survive.
I can barely pay four hundred dollars for rent, plus electricity, and put food on the table.
I’m only 26...

When I was young, everything was easy.
