Because it helps me
express myself about
the things around me
and what I believe
It helps people to see
me as me
Not her,
and definitely not somebody's
baby-mama
But as someone's cousin, aunt,
sister, daughter
as me, as poetry
As a future mother and wife
I have a life
I will have a career
and rejection from life
is not an option
Poetry makes me strong
so I can live long
By a certain tune or song
It's like music to my ears
Listen hard enough
an you'll probably hear what I hear
but I doubt it
Because the rain speaks to me
Nature speaks to me
It encourages me and tells me
what to write next
And by doing so nature helps
me solve my problems
She is one of my dearest friends
Girlfriends are supposedly always
the dearest friends
on which we can depend when men
do the unthinkably stupid
She helps my heart mend itself
All the kings horses and all the kings men
probably couldn't do it
but poetry can
because she told me she could
and I belive her
because she helps
me express myself
