With his blue spiked hair
Baggy shirt with the logo
For some rock band
With obscene lyrics that any parent
Who really cared about their kid
Would never approve of
Pants, three sizes too big
That hang off his waist
Sneakers, dirty and falling apart
And a cigarette held between two fingers
With painted nails
One glance is all it takes
For people to say
"They'd better watch that one
He's the kind of kid
You expect to see on the news
Because he shot a teacher
And five classmates"

People look at a "normal" kid
With his perfect blonde hair
And his beautiful blue eyes
Fifty dollar name-brand shirt
Seventy dollar designer label pants
Hundred and ten dollar shoes
Not a scuff to be found
And a pretty, cheerleader girlfriend
He's one of the most popular kids in school
One glance is all it takes
For people to say
"He's a good boy
Good grades, good parents, perfect life
Gonna be a doctor
Gonna amount to something"

When in reality
Cold, unforgiving reality
He's gonna wind up
A teen father
Drug addict
Highschool dropout
Killed in a car accident
When he caught a ride home
From one of those wild parties
With a drunk driver
Cause he cared
Cause he tried
And he fit in
But look what it got him
A body bag, a funeral service
And people left wondering
What could have gone wrong

Three years later
That punk with the blue hair
Is finishing his second year
In an Ivy League college
His hair's not blue anymore
And his pierced lip has grown shut
But he's got friends
A family that loves him
And a future
Guess what?
He's gonna be a doctor [comments] => 3 [counter] => 160 [topic] => 43 [informant] => ALineAboveTheStepBeneath [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 0 [ratings] => 0 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => oops )
