In another place... another time
I've heard all the stories about you, my dear
But the one I'll hold so near to my heart
Is how you took care of me
When I was just a babe in arms
You held me close and tight to your heart
To keep me safe and warm through the night

I would have loved to have known you
But I was just a babe when you died
I never got the chance in this lifetime
Except through the stories handed down through the years
I've grown to love you
Though I've never known you

You died when you were only twelve
And I was only one
You drown in a river
Where your family had gathered for a day's fun
And your dad died there too… while trying to save you...
I never knew him either
And I sure would have loved to have known him too
He sounded like he was the greatest dad in the world!

Our families have their memories
But none have I
I was too young to know or understand why
How the loss cut like a knife

I would have loved to have known you
But I was just a babe in arms
You held me close and tight to your heart
To keep me safe and warm through the night

In Heaven… you've been all these years
As angel… I've felt you near
To watch over me and the loved ones you left behind
You've been helping to guide our lives

I would have loved to have known you
But maybe someday we'll meet again...
