The doctors told me that you're dying and that you can't see at all
You're losing weight and your time has come
You don't want to live at all

For 5 years now you've talked of dying, you've been through so much pain
But do you remember when I was small
And I'd sit on your lap and you would tell the stories from your days?
You fought in wars for our family
You survived after many loses
I wish I could borrow some of your bravery right now

I wonder how I looked the last time that you saw me
Was it on Father's Day when we strolled hand in hand down the garden of flowers?
I remember helping you plant some, when I was very young
The garden meant everything to you
But now you want nothing at all

I know your time is drawing near and you are wanting to leave
And I know that I am being selfish, but I want you here with me
I've never lost anyone that I was so close to
If there is a God, why does he take away the ones I love?

I know I'm being selfish, I know that you want death
But I don't know if I am ready to say good-bye to you
What about our memories that you will leave behind?
What of all the broken hearts that you will leave to cry?

I don't know how to let go
I've never lost a loved one
I don't want to loose you
I need you here with me
I guess I should just pray that you die happily
Sound within your sleep

Dear Grandpa, when you die, please don't forget me
I love you [comments] => 6 [counter] => 389 [topic] => 23 [informant] => Katie2008 [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 15 [ratings] => 3 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => FamilyPoems )

Katie, this is so touching and I feel your pain..
Your great father has lived a full life I'm sure..and if he is in pain I think you have to start learning to let go...
Believe me, it is going too be hard..I have been thru many losses in my life.... but when you realise that it is probably for the best.
Hugs
Jenni

Katie, I know what you are going through as I have been through the exact same thing. Just be aware that when the time comes he will still be with you in spirit. You will miss his physical being but he will be in your heart and soul each day of your life. You will have loving memories and they will sustain you. It never gets easier in life to lose someone, but we do eventually grieve and allow it to pass. Just remember that he will no longer be in pain or a weak frail state. That is not what he would want. Be strong and just love him, while he is here and after he has left this physical world and gone to the next. Rita
