[bodytext] => THE THOUSAND MILE STARE…(©Peter Sprenkeler) A strange and foreboding expression of war, Only those whom have killed know it as law. Epitomizing grief…from the world life they tore, Sadness in the eyes…pleading what was it for? A blank and fearful appearance…glazed and lost, Trying to comprehend…the scale of the cost. The memories vivid…on their minds forever embossed, To what degree of insanity…have they crossed? I have heard the soldier…this appearance can wear, So much death…how does he cope or even care? It is his wounded soul that this burden must bear, You must have killed…to own the stare. A realization that a part of humanity he has ended, Down the staircase…of depravity he has descended. What he has inflicted…can never be mended, A fear his enemy’s barbarity…he may have transcended. A state of grief…of shock…of non-plussed mind, Grappling hopelessly…for answers to find. Emotions cannot within…utter a word that is kind, Personal humanity aches…the soul’s teeth grind. And yet those whom have experienced this stare…this state, Long for a time when the mental anguish will abate. For such intensity of pain…healing cannot wait, Yet only those with a heart…know healing will always be late.
