Who always wore charming summer dresses
And ate strawberries with sugar
Until her mother laughed at the ruby juice
That covered her daughter’s lips.

That girl grew into another child I knew,
A youngster that was independent
But still kind and loving to others,
A girl who loved the open air
And everything life had to offer.

And as time passed, and she
Moved to another neighborhood,
Her love of nature gradually dwindled,
And she became secluded,
And few, save her brother and I,
Seemed to know her at all.

Slowly, I was distanced from her.
I thought she was sweet and clever.
She saw herself as overweight and slow,
Falling into the trap of a teenager’s mentality,
But she was destined for worse times.

I watched from a distance, her not sensing
My presence in her life any longer,
As her father fell into troubled times,
Dragging her along unwillingly.
She would never admit it, but she missed me,
But I could not miss her.

She slowly descended in self-respect,
Resorting to criticized methods of control,
Discovering the effects of pain upon the mind.
Friends moved away and were replaced with
Other things. Only for control, she said,
But she couldn’t control herself.

And I sit here now, writing it all down,
Knowing this girl, and her knowing me,
But I refuse to coalesce the two, or rather
We’re incompatible. Can two opposites
Rejoin after being separated for so long?

I miss being that little girl with smiling eyes,
Eating strawberries in the summer
Until ruby juice dribbled down my jaw
Onto one of those cute summer dress,
But a girl that has endured so much,
Can’t ever return to such an innocent state. [comments] => 7 [counter] => 181 [topic] => 61 [informant] => Cole [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 19 [ratings] => 4 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => selfstruggles )

I absolutely love your style. You start so casually and sweetly, but I know immediately that you would take us on a journey and would touch us in some way. You tell such rich, powerful stories. This one tugs at my heart. This is beautifully done!

You're right... none of us can ever return to the true innocence of our youth. We can though move forward and find something equally as wonderful. *hug*

Wishing you wonderful things-
SNM

I love this poem, When I look back at my childhood I see such a different person... it's odd how change can take us beyond our own control...

Excellent! This is admirable. You have a masterful way of expressing what's on your mind.
But hang on to hope! Going through darkness can be strengthening, not defeating. See it through, my friend.
Blessings.
