I was looking for a way out of all of this.
Why we didn’t part sooner I will never know,
So now I smile and blow you one last kiss.

I don’t need you; I don’t miss an earlier time and place,
That summer in the highlands when the sun would never set,
In lantern twilight, soft golden on your hair and face,
A remembrance of heather may thread a moist eye, but yet,

I don’t need you; I wonder if I did ever care
Like sad movies when I’d catch you brush away a tear,
And we’d laugh and blush at such sentiment to share
But I recall being touched by that tender side, my dear.

I don’t need you; but perhaps I’m too blind to see
How, even though at home we’d always fight,
When the outside world would turn against me,
You were always at my side, my loyal valiant knight

I don’t need you, though it does undo my pride,
To recall the trust your heart so freely offered,
That vulnerable self you never sought to hide,
A willing sacrifice upon my stained altar proffered.

I don’t need you, yet it could make me weep,
Thinking how I loved that I could bring you gladness,
Laughter that would from the darker moments keep
Our spirits risen, a soft balm to gentle bitter sadness.

I don’t need you, but now I count the cost.
No love unalloyed but in time gets tarnished and worn,
Too precious a jewel never sees day for fear it is lost.
Phoenix like, real love from ashes rises and is reborn.

I don't need you, I don’t love you, I don’t want you.
How heartsick am I now of the refrain.
I don’t need you, I don’t love you, I don’t want you,
A litany of lies to numb all feeling and pain.
