Often new ones too
Clothes dirty and riddled with holes
A foul smell about them
They ask for the time
I say no
Tho I do have the time
They ask for spare change
I say no
Tho sometimes I have change
They ask for a cigarette
I say no
Tho often I have had to ask others
Sometimes I am ashamed
At how easily I forget

Your surprise ending begs the question, was it a handout of spare change or a cigarette that got you off of the street?
More likely the homeless seek other options when they can no longer rely on the generosity of strangers to sustain them.
It is a sad truth, but we do not "help" by keeping the homeless out of shelters. We are unable to do for them what the organized charities are equipped to do. Provide long term care; restore dignity; rebuild bodies minds and spirits; and restore self reliance.
No one was ever born wanting to live on the streets. But it can be undone, as you so candidly pointed out. I admire your courage. It is easy to make ourselves feel better by giving. It is hard to do the right thing.

A honest write for sure.
I started saying no because many were just addicts and just trying to score. They made a life choice and most didn/'/t have the issues me or my mother have.

I/'/d see them daily and most were young and otherwise healthy and some were just bums to be honest. Of course I/'/m always ready to lend a hand to somebody down on their luck. I know very well tomorrow it could be me.....
