How can so much joy pour from the rivlets of rain soaking

Through my coat as I trudge through endless puddles of

Opportunity, my focus a tail that endlessly wags and back legs

That sideways wiggle in to my laughter and for every one step

Forward she zig zags her way pelting with enthusiasm, to search

Every thicket and bramble till adorned with leaves the tokens of

Thorough exploration, this total and utter bundle of joy ploughs

Into fences to find a way through, brings energy into the quietness

Of rain soaked green and like a favourite advert she diverts my mind

From absorbing Nature to hypnotic love of a waggy tail, and I dare to

Think that I play with her! Such knowing eyes tease my pathetic attempts

At authority and jaws stay firmly shut on the command of, ' drop!' or 'give!'

For she will allow me to think I am in charge.

Pockets filled to saturation and mentally I celebrate her madness the

Infectious energy, the hurtling into undergrowth and still that tail wags

And even when she rests in the back of the car with one eye watching

She knows she had me from the start!

See? Like I said in my other comment, there are good people like you in this world...and then there are the Scarlets of the world.

Loved reading this. Loved the feeling it gave me and the smile across this ol' face.

Thank you!

Hi Anna,

I trust she was not named 'Scarlet' due to the
wild and exotic life that she once lived?
She certainly sounds like one who has been
round the block a few times and very much
of independent spirit.

A jaunty little piece - uplifting and entertaining.

Couldn't fail to smile at this and remember dogs that I've had in the past and my sister in law's current miscreant.
We love them despite their willfulness
We never tire of their playfulness
They always mange to turn sadness into happiness with a waggle of the tail and trusting eyes.
If only more people were like dogs the world might be a little less dark.

Well written. You have captured the nature of The springer spaniel so well. They are absolutely tireless, but adorable too.
