The broom emphasising his crooked spine

He Sweeps

Thick saliva falling from his mouth
Tears fall to the ground from exhaustion
His clothes worn and oversized
He smells like he is forgotten
His face reflects the loneliness in his heart
Head bowed low yet he is not ashamed

He clears the path for her
It was her request to him
This was her request
And now she is gone
The need for her happiness lives on in his heart
He hears her sweet voice in his soul

He mutters quietly to himself
“I do this for you my beautiful, wife
Everyday, I do this for you”

He imagines her sweet smiling face of approval
And closes his eyes to soak in the memory of her
She was his very soul, his reason for being
He grips the broom as a familiar pain of longing devours him
And waits for a distraction from his anguish

He remembers a poem he wrote for her so many years ago

Never leave me my beautiful wife
To be without you would end my life

If I should die before you’re gone
My love for you will always live on

Carry with you my darling where ever you go
The knowledge that I adore you so

I promise to you my endless love
And will love you still in heaven above
