[title] => The Knarled Old Tree
[time] => 2009-04-19 16:18:33
[hometext] => The Inspiration for this poem came from a weekend retreat at Jesuit Retreat House and symbolizes an experience I encountered there.
[bodytext] => A hollowed old tree, knarled, bent and broken. Branches droop exhaustedly toward the ground. No longer can I majestically stand sentry over this sacred holy ground. Only a shadow of my former self, yet I will give you all that this tree can be. My surface is rugged and pitted, a texture of cuts and grooves. Showing my age with wrinkles and hollowed spaces, time has taken its toll on this sentry as I protected sacred ground from the enemy. Even now I stand tall with my peers, my suit of armor a defense against the enemy; my fears. My shape continues with a beauty all my own, my unique form is sculpted, my silhouette against the twilight sky. Defending our Christian soldiers from the devils' fury. Bravely this old tree faces natures' elements lashing out with thunder clapping and lightening flashing; a chorus to the devils' refrain. Even with my dwindling strength and stature, this old knarled tree has given of myself unsparingly. My only goal: to guard against the evil that threatens humanity.
