[bodytext] => Editor's Note: I confess to being the "My lady" of the poem, other stanzas came from experiences I dealt with while working as a nurse. I loved my job, but hated the money/bureucratic bullcrap. The cost of insurance in this country is outrageous. Surgical procedures even more so.

Ms B's got a chronic cough
shes been dealing with
Quit smoking a few years back
Frothy rust colored sputum
plagues her in the morns
Keeps wheezing every time
she takes a few steps
Up her stairs and back
Needs a chest x-ray for she
fears the worst
Cancer took her mother
Yeah, it took her first

My lady has been bleeding heavy
every menstrual month
Depleting her life blood so quickly
feeling weaker all the while
Headaches and depression
besiege her
on her pale face you can tell
Needs a uterine ablation
Doctor needs the money up front
or she can make monthly payments
to get that uterus all fixed up

Man downstairs
got a sore on his foot
Won't never seem to heal
Step on something outside
at first ..didn't seem a big deal
Refuses to see a quack doctor
can't afford their damn bill
He's scared and doesn't know what to do
wound is reddened and smells

Same thing going on
all over this darn world
People
Humans
in need of
medical care but
just don't have the money
Folks don't have no insurance
no way to pay the outrageous
doctor bills
So they survive
barely keepin' alive
while their doctors live in wealth
up in the hills

Society ain't right
Something needs to be done
People suffering needlessly
in a country full of money
Best hospitals and doctors
but who the heck can tell
common man with no insurance
lives in his own hell

Your poem made me think about the healthcare system in the UK. I know our health system isn't the best, waiting lists are outrageous and there is a severe shortage of hospital beds, but I am thankful that healthcare here is free (although for those who can afford it there is the option to go private). Good healthcare should be available to everyone equally and the stories you narrate here are tragic. Something obviously isn't right.

Thank you for a thought provoking read,

Dom

Boy do I know how this works ... I loose 2 toes ... twenty pounds ... spend 10 days in a hospital and am outta work for 3 months ... and get sent a bill that says "your insurance is going to pay $ 36,000.00 dollars of your medical expenses .... well I'm glad I had insurance ... but I'm thinkin' ... I shoulda kept 'em and sold 'em on E-Bay !!!!
