Who stand rooted in the valley,
The river a coiled blue carpet
Back to the thunderous mountain throne.
The sky their Great Hall’s ceiling,
More immense than one in life.
The dwellers are their servants,
Far below their lofty heights.

All around the air is thick,
Huge trunks bend over blocking light,
Tumbling foliage encroaches on the path,
Claustrophobic, shadows, dark.

Higher up the branches
More rays filter through the leaves,
Dappling brown to amber,
Blackness into green.

Near atop the tallest king,
Just through a parting in the leaves,
The forest undulates all around,
Stretching back to mountain’s base.
Up where the crow flies,
Above their heads, leaf-crowned,
The forest kings soundlessly leer over
Tiny people onward bound.

To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of nature poetry (not that I have anything at all against nature... just that I am, it seems, more people-focused). This, though, caught and held my attention.

Nice presentation here... interesting for the inclusion of the unexpected (I can't recall the the last time I saw "undulates" in a piece, for instance *wink*). I must confess, however, to having struggled to embrace the perspective -- thunderous mountains, an immense sky, trees as kings.... it all works, of course... but when contrasted to "tiny people" seems to suggest the human experience is less significant than I, personally, want to believe. I truly don't mean to be argumentitive or contradictory... but I do fervently believe that we (people) are, too, enormous. Ah, indeed... perhaps we'll never be as physically sizable as the sky or those grand trees, but I do think it's possible to live in such a way as to feel that we are.

(Please forgive me for rambling away of my own thoughts in your comment section... I do so get carried away sometimes.)

Nice work -
~Snemmy

Amoung the trees I feel the peace of earths natural breath and I can breath deep, long and take in many wisdoms. This piece is beautifully written and takes me into that forest picture you have painted with your words. Thank you

I liked the way you have formulated the entire sequence - notably;
"All around the air is thick,
Huge trunks bend over blocking light,
Tumbling foliage encroaches on the path,
Claustrophobic, shadows, dark.

Higher up the branches
More rays filter through the leaves,
Dappling brown to amber,
Blackness into green."

you poem was truly a pleasure to read.

FRANCO.

Ah this is a song for 'Treebeard' to sing. Your poetic talent has a rich palette to bring to expression a slice of the "Last Forest." As a fan of such literature I feel this deeply.

Well Done

Peace

Oh my dear poet .. you have me longing for spring in the
most painful way ... (lovely to see the mention of
"treebeard" in AJ's comment too .. lol)

This was complete and splendid in all its beauty and
magnificence. I, too, find the trees a masterful presence.
And in mid-summer, while enduring the hot noon-day sun, there
is nowhere more welcoming, than the cool, depths of the forest ..

a most pleasing write, Dom

~Breezy

This writting give's new meaning to the word Majestic. A strong visualization i got from this. along with the injustice that is done to trees. I dare not venture a guess of what there thinking if it's at all posible to conceive that they are capable of this funtion. Great writting.
