The yellow rays of the setting sun
embraced the lush green meadows,
painting them into a glittering gold.
A lass afar sang the song for her toiling beloved,
late in the fields, blended smoothly
the jingling bells of ecstatic herds on return.

Children played and danced with joy
to the tune of liberty,
but sat a child in a corner with
pearls of tears trickling
over her pale cheek, bearing a puzzle
in her eyes, gazed skeptically
at her father with qualm
in her heart, she tingled.

“Papa, the mountain far beyond
where flocks graze, whispers strange things
back at - me calling upon aloud. Deep down the
dark pit rises the rolling voice grumble’s
back that I am not, impish words
that I had uttered, the valley call’s
the same in return, that I am not.”
“Gem ‘o’ daughter, that‘s the way of life is;
thou shall receive what thy offer, wise nature’s
mountain folds enlightened thee, by humming
back thy own impish song in ripples.”

An interesting way of looking at nature and children. There are some beautiful images in this poem, I particularly like the first three lines, I can just see that sunset!

How beautiful my friend...you never cease to amaze me....this is fresh from the gentle breezes that whisper across the mountains and tapestry of the skies...scooped up by your pen and transfered to paper.Well done

I adore that you've dropped this in the "Children's Poetry" category. Without a doubt, successful children's poetry is that which prods young minds to think further. This, I'm certain, would do so.

My own daughter's bookshelf is littered with Seuss, Silverstein, Lansky, Prelutsky and the like... fun stuff that gets the imagination going and makes the moral go down a la Mary Poppins ("a spoon full of sugar" and all that). But, as much as I adore that sort of children's poetry (and I am a huge Seuss fan!), I do fully believe that "good children's poetry" is simply good poetry. It needn't be child-like to be engaging, entertaining and educational to a young mind. Moreover, to assume that it need be, is, I think, an awful oversight. It is for this very reason that I, too, share "grown up poetry" with my daughter. And it is, frankly, why I like this piece very much.

Wonderful piece with a terrific close. I enjoyed this!
